Peter Hatfield was born in the middle of Brass Band country, namely Huddersfield in Yorkshire, England. That tradition passed him by, coming from a family of string players (his mother played cello in the Huddersfield Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted, at that time by Arthur Butterworth, and his sister is concertmaster in the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, based in Cardiff). After moving, with his family, south to Maidstone in Kent, he took up the horn, eventually studying at th Royal Academy of Music with Nicholas Busch (LPO) and Dereck Taylor (BBCSO). He also studied conducting with Colin Metters and George Hurst, and has since then attended classes with Jorma Panula. After leaving RAM in 1989, he was a freelance hornplayer based in London, playing in many of the leading orchestras and ensembles there including the Royal Opera House, BBCSO, London Sinfonietta, and the Almeida Ensemble. Since 1996, he has been a member of the horn group in the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, and in 2000 he co-founded the Trondheim Sinfonietta, an ensemble specializing in contemporary music, and which he has conducted on several occasions. In 2007 he was appointed conductor of the Trondheim Police Brass Band and led them to promotion to the 2nd division at the NM in 2008. He has also conducted Nidarholm Musikforening, Byneset Musikkorps, and has led Ila Brass in several projects, starting with Elgar´s Enigma Variations arr. Eric Ball in 2007. |
